Storage network allows iconic production to grow and develop
Boston, MA, March 16, 2023 – EditShare®, the technology leader that enables storytellers to create and manage collaborative media workflows, has supplied two post-production storage nodes to the production responsible for This Old House, US television’s hugely popular restoration show which focuses on the crafts that go into renovating buildings. The show reaches audiences of tens of millions of enthusiastic fans and has 21 Emmy® Awards and 119 nominations.
This Old House started in 1979 and is now in its 44th season. Based in its own facilities in Concord, Massachussetts, the company was recently acquired by the streaming platform, Roku and has seen a huge upsurge in activity.
Working with EditShare’s channel partner T2|Computing, This Old House recently installed two EFS300 160TB storage nodes. The initial goal was to supplement the existing storage and asset management system with a more flexible, more dynamic store to meet the workflow and throughput challenges of the expanded output.
Michael Svirsky Post Production Manager, Roku Inc.
Michael Svirsky has been overseeing post-production systems and solutions at This Old House for 16 years. “The Roku acquisition has driven a rapid expansion with new shows and more output,” he said. “The result is that we need new workflows and much greater accessibility to our media.
“EditShare understands the requirements for post today, which is one of our main reasons for choosing them and to move increasingly towards the workflows that they can offer us,” he continued. “Reliability is also very important to us: when you have a huge number of assets and over 1,000 episodes you cannot risk the slightest chance of anything disappearing.”
Said Bacho, CRO at Editshare, added “This Old House has been making programs for four decades, and using shared storage for 16 years, but Michael Svirsky and his team recognize that they have to continually develop and refine their workflows to ensure they are delivering the best creativity in the most ordered way. They also face the challenge of originating in 4k, and even 8k, so the storage demand is growing exponentially.
“They are a great team to work with. I am very pleased that we have been able to provide the agile storage they need, and we’re looking forward to helping them with new, dynamic ways of working in the future.”

Chello is an agency that believes the role of brand has never been more important. They also bridge the gap between brand and content and promote the ethos that when you know who you are as a brand and what you represent, what you say and what you create all becomes a lot more meaningful. Chello also adopt a similar forward-thinking approach to their technology and post-production storage solutions, which recently they upgraded with Digistor and EditShare.
Chello co-founder and creative director, Tristan Velasco
Chello co-founder and creative director, Tristan Velasco, explained, “We had just moved to new offices and figured it was the right time to upgrade our storage solutions. Previously, we were using Synology NAS’ but we knew we needed something that was more reliable at much higher speeds – particularly to be able to edit 4K+ footage. We had been speaking to a number of agencies that we knew in video production and EditShare had been mentioned a few times. When we got in touch with Digistor, it was the one they recommended as well, so we felt confident enough that it would be the right system for us.”
They also required automated backup and archive solutions, via archiware, in order to be able to easily back up and archive projects. Then the storage solution had to be easily scalable and everyone in the agency needed to have remote access to the server through the company’s network.
Velasco added, “Put simply, the EditShare solution easily met all of our requirements and we are yet to even maximise how we use EditShare FLOW.”
In total Chello purchased EditShare’s EFS software defined ecosystem and EditShare FLOW media management for their data storage solution and daily workflow.
Typically, they use EFS to store all recent and live projects across video, animation and design and manage all project files via a templated folder structure. This contains all raw footage and source files including photography, 3D assets, illustrations, all project files and their various versions, delivery files across video, animation and design and production related files.
Velasco continued, “When we were researching the benefits of EditShare I remember other solutions being in the mix but, based on the recommendations from Digistor and our own subsequent research, we felt EditShare was by far the best solution that met our needs at the time and into the future. The main thing for us was how smart EditShare products are and how the entire EditShare solution was put together for us by Digistor. We had a really clear idea on what it needed to do based on our requirements above and it met all of those requirements.”
According to Velasco their EditShare solution and relationship with Digistor give Chello a clear edge as he concluded, “From a technology and workflow perspective, the edge EditShare gives us is primarily around the speed at which we are able to work on projects requiring really large file sizes, the security of our backup systems and archive systems. It’s second to none. We’ve been working with Digistor for many years now and without having an IT department, the team that we work with there really feel like they’re an extension of our team. They are incredibly responsive to any request – especially emergencies, are patient with managing our requests and are just really nice people. Especially for me, who had managed all IT issues prior to the engagement, it has saved me a lot of time being able to rely on Digistor to support myself and the team. In other words, Digistor are an absolute 10 out of 10 for me.”

Shared storage environments are critical to the successful operation of all modern-day education institutions. At the top of that tree are some of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious universities, including the University of Sydney and the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), both of whom use EditShare storage solutions supplied by Digistor.
EditShare shared storage solutions in use at the University of Sydney
The University of Sydney’s Manager, Media Production, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Indigenous Strategy and Services, Tom Cavdarovski, explained, “Our media team has grown over the last few years and our postproduction workflow has changed to meet the growing demands. We use EditShare systems and find them particularly suitable for a growing production slate.”
The University of Sydney’s Manager, Media Production, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Indigenous Strategy and Services, Tom Cavdarovski
UTS’ Client Computing Manager Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Simon Prowse, agreed saying, “The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) runs courses in communications including journalism and production. These courses include sound production, film and animation. In the past FASS used a different shared storage solution but decided to move to a more open environment for production workflows. UTS has now been using an EditShare solution for around 9 years has recently acquired new EFS storage and FLOW licences for student off site usage for editing.”

For the University of Sydney, the requirements were centred around a secured, robust, 4K editing storage solution with Cavdarovski adding, “We have huge amounts of 4K data that needs to be accessed across multiple editors. Our content is captured on country with drones, C300 and DSLR cameras. We also produce multicamera live stream events, so having a post-production system workflow that integrates with creating pre-packaged content, is an important part of our workflow.”
In UTS’ case the university required a sizeable amount of storage capacity and bandwidth to handle up to 60 concurrent connections for editing from personal and group project spaces on the server.
Prowse said, “This time around we chose 10GB Ethernet with 20GB link aggregation to a 10GB switch. Since COVID there is more need for flexibility and a need for more students to work remotely. We also have students studying remotely overseas so the need for working from the server remotely was important. As most of the editing is done with Adobe, the Premier plugin was desirable.”
UTS’ Client Computing Manager Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Simon Prowse
It’s clear for both universities that the EditShare solutions for education shared storage environments are a vital part of their courses and day-to-day operations as Cavdarovski explained, “The EditShare system Digistor installed has RAID redundancy, integrates with existing university infrastructure and allows our editors to work in various 4K resolutions seamlessly.”
Prowse echoed this sentiment saying, “It’s a flexible arrangement for constantly changing circumstances. Openness and flexibility of the solution is important and EditShare meets this perfectly. Courses and requirements change and we can easily add capacity, bandwidth or capabilities with plugins.”
The University of Sydney uses a 98TB EFS 300 system with 8 clients PC connections. These are both Mac and Windows computers, all connected via 10Gb network ethernet connections and all editors are able to open Adobe Creative Cloud projects at any time.
EditShare’s cloud platform EditShare FLEX has evolved to a suite of turnkey, ready-to-go solutions for remote collaborative workflows and video editing in the cloud. Users of EditShare FLEX choose the modules they need – including edit in the cloud and multi-premises synchronisation – and implement them in their own cloud account. This gives users an easy opportunity to implement cloud solutions which education institutions often consider the best way to utilise a combination of on-premise and cloud storage and editing.
There are many on premises and cloud solutions at UTS. They run an animation render farm for the faculty that is on server blades in the data centre and processing of jobs is distributed to around 300 lab computers. UTS also has an HPC environment as well an Isilon which is widely used across the university. The faculty EditShare EFS can backup to Isilon which represents a cost saving to leverage other products in the EditShare solution.
Workflows are obviously at the core of these solutions as Cavdarovski explained, “We have a mix of projects throughout the year, some are quick turnaround with a single producer and editor, while others are 12 months in post and up 50 individual videos with shared resources across multiple editors.”
Prowse added, “We keep our workflows reasonably basic. EditShare is the file server for students’ media work. The workflows involve group spaces for group projects and these have a set folder structure. Students also have personal scratch space with quotas. Class materials are in spaces accessible to students from either the lab and suite facilities or on their BYO devices accessible from home via the client and VPN or on campus.”
A UTS shared storage workflow may also involve students borrowing faculty sound, lighting and video equipment and doing a shoot. They will then upload content to EditShare via a lab or studio computer.
It’s clear that both Cavdarovski and Prowse are big fans of the EditShare solutions for education shared storage environments they purchase from Digistor as Cavdarovski highlighted, “We have used smaller storage solutions in the past, but found they are very limited and lacked performance beyond one or two concurrent users compared to the EditShare solution we now have. We really like the FLOW application that we purchased as part of the EditShare package. It allows the team of editors to log content easily, accurately and create proxies for working offline and working flexibly. FLOW helps to ensure that we can always store, retrieve and broadcast the appropriate content.”
Whilst Prowse said, “We feel that EditShare has a flexible and futureproofed product that is not proprietary or rigid. It’s modular so we are not paying for capabilities that we do not need now but have the option to add capability, licences or services going forward. Lots of storage capacity in the EditShare solution is important and being on premise, we can leverage the fast network for connections, transfers and backup.”
When asked to explain what edge using the EditShare solutions Digistor provided gives their university Tom Cavdarovski concluded, “The EditShare system enables our team to work more efficiently, reducing menial tasks and streamlining complex workflows. This frees the team up to work in more creative and innovative space, which in this industry, is a what customers and partners want from content producers. Our experience with Digistor has always been very professional, I have been purchasing postproduction systems for over 20 years and they understand how to work with clients who work in large complex organisations, like a university.”
Whilst Simon Prowse concluded, “We have had excellent experiences with both EditShare and Digistor. This is our third renewal of hardware over 9 years and the sales and project process has been smooth each time. Any support issues are dealt with promptly and professionally too. My IT team has to be across a huge amount of knowledge to effectively manage all of the moving parts in this complex university environment. Hence, we need to rely on good support for specialised solutions, applications and facilities. Thus, the great confidence we have in Digistor and EditShare is a very important factor for us.”

Cloud-ready network forms bedrock of major new investment program
Boston, MA, September 21, 2022 – EditShare®, the technology leader that enables storytellers to create and manage collaborative media workflows, has supplied a FLOW asset management system to Brazilian production company Fabrika. The powerful new facilities are central to Fabrika’s bold plans to move into major productions and its own OTT streaming channel.
As well as producing its own content, Fabrika also provides the content storage facilities for the Office of the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil. With this, the company made the decision to invest in its own asset management facilities, as early as 2007.
With a shift in business model towards commercial production as well as long-form television, and plans for OTT services, Fabrika recognized the need for powerful new facilities and turned to systems integration company CIS Group and EditShare’s FLOW to help fulfil this requirement. Its first channel, the education-focused Cientik, will be launched in September 2022.
“We needed a new asset management platform, with more agility and good integration with cloud solutions,” said José Luiz Nogueira, Partner and Founder of Fabrika. “CIS has been our consultant and partner for many years, and we turned to them to support us in defining our requirements and the purchase decision.”
“CIS works regularly with EditShare, and when we tested their FLOW asset management system it was clearly the best choice for Fabrika,” added Nogueira. “It is a high performance, scalable solution, and it offers a complete orchestration of workflows and work processes. CIS and EditShare could point to successful deployments around the world, and we were very confident they could meet our requirements.”
The new installation at Fabrika is built on the EFS300 storage nodes, with FLOW asset management software tuned to the requirements of post-production workflows. It was installed by CIS in August and is now in use across all of Fabrika’s departments.
“What we have delivered to Fabrika is a compact and cost-effective solution that allows them to catalog, browse, collaborate, edit and archive, all from a single layer of user interface,” commended Said Bacho, Chief Revenue Officer at EditShare. “It is more than just asset management: it provides the complete post production ecosystem, allowing users to edit from wherever they are.”
Ricardo Freitas, Service Account Manager at CIS Group, stated, “As admirers and partners of Fabrika for quite some time, and on multiple fronts, we were well-equipped to understand Fabrika’s unique requirements, and operational preferences. Upon defining priorities and use cases, we were able to architect a solution, leveraging the capabilities of EditShare FLOW, in order to provide Fabrika with an ideal tool for their content management, editorial, and archiving needs in a secure, reliable, and scalable manner. With these workflows, Fabrika’s producers and editors will be enabled to create more content quicker, driving operational efficiencies by decreasing overall time-to-delivery”.

Latest investment includes storage, automated workflows, quality control and archiving
Boston, MA, July 28, 2022 – EditShare®, the technology leader that enables storytellers to create and manage collaborative media workflows, has extended its shared video storage solution at Ba Ria – Vung Tau Radio and Television Station (BRT), including the platforms for archiving and increased automation. The new facilities also include an additional four 160TB EditShare EFS-300 storage nodes to add capacity for production requirements.
BRT is the broadcaster for Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province, in the south-east of Vietnam. It has been using EditShare storage for a number of years. Now, with production and transmission demands increasing greatly, it has become necessary to provide automated media management and quality control functionality to boost workflows.
The new installation calls upon the functionality available in the EditShare FLOW media management and workflow software. This gives BRT the ability to manage remote log-ins and to automate content flows through production to delivery. New material arriving at the station must pass local conformance checks and quality control, and thanks to FLOW’s AirFLOW and FLOW Automation, these can now be performed remotely if required.
Ever-increasing amounts of content, completed and in production, meant that it was important to add archiving capabilities, and the extension includes EditShare ARK. This includes LTO-8 tape drives and associated software to ensure automated archiving against business rules, and speedy recovery when required.
“EditShare has proven an excellent storage platform for us, that helps us to be more proactive and flexible during production, playout and storage and we particularly like the system’s flexible user permissions” said Mr. Le An Thi – Technical Manager at Ba Ria – Vung Tau Radio and Television. “As our production and broadcast demands have grown, we have recognised that we need to adopt more automation to reduce the amount of manual work, while also ensuring that we maintain our high standards. After researching the various products in the marketplace, EditShare was quickly identified as being the best option and they have been able to provide a complete solution – from ingest to storage to playout, including the facilities we need for file quality, transcoding and censorship.”
Based on the end-user’s requirements and initiatives, Editshare’s partner, Danmon Asia with its headquarters in Hanoi – Vietnam, designed the system in conjunction with application engineers from EditShare.
“We are very pleased that we have been able to work with BRT again, to automate their workflows and provide cost-effective content management,” commented Said Bacho, Chief Revenue Officer at EditShare. “This is a great example of the flexibility of our architecture, in that it allows users to start with accessible storage and add functionality and automation as they need it, while always preserving the investment at each stage. We are also grateful for the expertise and understanding of our local partner on the ground, Danmon Asia Ltd.”

Automated workflows, quality control and archiving at the center of its Amsterdam show
Boston, MA – July 26, 2022 – EditShare®, the technology leader that enables storytellers to create and manage collaborative media workflows, will use IBC2022 (Amsterdam RAI, 9-12 September, stand 7.A35) to showcase how its latest technologies boost quality and efficiency for production and post production. Demonstrations will show how remote working and the cloud can interwork to give creative artists seamless and secure access to the tools they rely on.
Central to this is the ability to use EditShare post-production storage spaces and FLOW workflow tools to synchronize projects across the popular NLE platforms, including Media Composer, Adobe® Premiere® Pro and DaVinci Resolve. The latest release of core FLOW media asset management system allows complex projects to be moved as needed between EditShare media management and whichever edit environment the creative team needs to use.
Having its first showing in Amsterdam will be the latest suite of EditShareFLEX software solutions for out-of-the-box cloud and hybrid workflows. FLEX reflects the powerful business trends in post today, including the migration to a “work anywhere” environment, with ready access to content wherever the creative staff need to be. In adopting video cloud storage and processing, it also meets the move towards an OpEx financial model, with the cloud hosting and storage fees flexing to reflect the level of business.
“The post industry is changing, in part reflecting the changes enforced by the pandemic, and in part because creative talent is looking to shift the work/life balance,” comments Said Bacho, Chief Revenue Officer at EditShare. “What we now present is an eco-system where editors and other post artists can choose their preferred tools, and work where they like, when they like, without it in any way compromising their creativity or limiting the quality, even as we move to 4k and higher resolutions, and to HDR.”
EditShare’s EFS Multi-Site will also be on the booth for the first time this IBC. Multi-Site allows users with multiple locations to leverage built-in file acceleration to synchronize project storage between EFS clusters in different facilities. This ensures that users have ready access to content, wherever they choose to work. FLEX Cloud Sync extends the capabilities of Multi-Site to cloud storage, providing added flexibility in access as well as security in archiving.
For news and sports fast turnaround editing, FLOW supports direct ingest of NDI contribution feeds for immediate editing. Working in conjunction with the Helmut orchestration platform from MoovIT, IBC will see demonstrations of practical high-pressure editing operations linking EditShare storage with Adobe software.
Content security and availability is vital to professional users, and EditShare has added new hardware and software in this area. The new EFS 60NL nearline storage provides 60 drive bays and nearly 1PB of storage in just 4U of rack space. This offers secure storage for large amounts of content which is needed but not immediately worked on, ready to be transferred to the online servers with virtually no delay. The 60NL is also the first hardware platform to utilize the new EFS capability for erasure coding-based storage goals, eliminating the need for hardware based RAID.
Rolling updates to EditShare’s FLOW software platform ensure that the latest raw formats from popular camera systems like RED and Blackmagic Design are accepted, with LUTs imposed in real time, both on full resolution material and on proxies, boosting remote working using intelligent proxy management.
“IBC has always been very important to EditShare, a real opportunity to exchange ideas with our users and partners from around the world,” Bacho added. “The whole team is excited to be returning to Amsterdam, seeing our users and partners face-to-face, and discussing the creative and operational challenges they encounter and how EditShare can provide proven solutions today and into the future.”

In its Montevideo headquarters, across the city from the Antel data center, it has two production studios and it is the home of 2 post-production facilities, Colour and Boat. The partnership with Antel provides scalable and flexible access to the best editing and colour grading tools, giving it a powerful offering and advantage.
“Latin America is a booming region for video production, and we can provide the connectivity to allow producers to work with the high-quality facilities at REDUCTO from any part of the continent,” said Gustavo Andrés Arbiza Mattos, Telecommunications Engineer at Antel. “EditShare and its innovative storage and workflow architectures enabled us to create a compelling business case for hosting video services. The ability to support very high bandwidth services like uncompressed digital cinematography and Ultra HD, and good scalability both on premise and in the cloud, means that we can respond in an agile way to the growth of the market.”
Thanks to the high-speed connectivity from Antel, REDUCTO is now able to serve the broadcast and media market across the whole of Latin America from its central location. The latest additions to the EditShare environment support resolutions up to 8k, meaning it can deliver services for the movie and events industry as well as broadcast.
Producers can be granted access to the shared storage to view progress without the need to travel to Uruguay. EditShare FLOW provides the security functionality for protected tenancies, allowing REDUCTO to host productions for multiple clients simultaneously and in time, for Antel to offer the same hosting and connectivity service to other media clients.
Mateo Musitelli, Project Manager RC&C at REDUCTO added “Prestige productions demand secure and flexible facilities. EditShare gives us native tools for remote production, fast and intuitive workflows, and the knowledge that the content entrusted to us is always secure and always available. It is a key element in our continuing expansion plans as a leader in the media industry across the region.”

Flexible, cloud-enabled workflows, project synchronization with NLEs, LUT and RAW support, live capture and more
Boston, MA – March 17, 2022 –EditShare®, the technology leader that enables storytellers to create and manage collaborative media workflows, will showcase its continuing efforts to make post production seamlessly creative at NAB2022 (Las Vegas Convention Center, 24-27 April, booth N3008). The latest enhancements provide unrivalled interworking and even greater content security and availability.
Creatives will be excited to see project synchronization with NLEs, including Media Composer, Adobe® Premiere® Pro and DaVinci Resolve, and EditShare’s FLOW workflow tools. The next release of the core FLOW software will include the first implementation of this integration, allowing complex projects to be readily moved between EditShare media management and the NLE environment.
“This is all about simplifying the day-to-day experience for our customers,” said Sunil Mudholkar, VP Product Management, EditShare. “We have always provided interoperability with the NLE editing environment, but with this latest development we eliminate manual drag and drop, ensuring project information is continually updated.”
Also added to FLOW is the ability to support the latest RAW format updates for RED and Blackmagic Design camera systems and impose LUTs in real time, both on full resolution material and on proxies. For news and sports fast turnaround editing, FLOW can now ingest NDI contribution feeds and immediately present them for editing. The NAB demonstration will also show how the Helmut 4 orchestration platform from MoovIT makes Adobe and EditShare the perfect environment for high pressure operations.
Content security and availability is vital to professional users, and EditShare is adding new hardware and software in this area. The EFS 60NL is a new device, aimed at nearline storage, and providing 60 drive bays in 4U of rack space. Within the EditShare environment, nearline storage is ideal for content which is needed but not being immediately worked on, ready to be transferred to the online servers with virtually no delay.
Adding to the security and sharing concept, EFS Multi-Site allows users with multiple locations to leverage built-in file acceleration to synchronize project storage between EFS clusters in different facilities. This ensures that users have ready access to content, wherever they choose to work. Cloud Sync extends the capabilities of Multi-Site to cloud video storage, providing added flexibility in access as well as security in archiving. Further enhancements to the company’s cloud offering and partnership with AWS are due to be announced next month.
“We are so pleased to be able to meet our friends, customers and collaborators at NAB2022,” said Stephen Tallamy, CTO, EditShare. “We’re excited to be showing so many new innovations, all of which are either available now or will be in the June 2022 software release, and of course we can’t wait to officially collect our recently awarded Emmy® from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) at a ceremony during the show.”
